Selfstyled “pimptress” of breakbeat, Singaporean DJ Reiki (aka Jean Reiki) is perhaps no stranger to the regional scene. A veritable pillar due to her break site BreakinAsia and her monthly show Fixation on Singaporean underground radio station Meshradio, Reiki has played some of the biggest events in the region, including Phuture:Breaks, Sirens, Plastqe,Guerrilla, Pop My Cherry and 44Beatz in Singapore, Flava Breaks in Malaysia, Salem Innovation Sessions in Hong Kong and Breakzelecta in Thailand.
Her fascination with soundscapes and frenzied, pounding hooks–influenced by the likes of Omar Santana, Aphex Twin, Astral Projection and Opus III–have seen her support renowned drum ‘n’ bass DJs Aphrodite, Mickey Finn and John B; the break ambassador of Asia, Tony Tay; as well as British break DJ General Midi. More recently, her involvement with 44Beatzsaw her transcend breaks and expand into electro and house (most notably at the iconic Taboo in Singapore).
Sultry DJ Reiki is, in truth, an Energizer bunny of activity. For BreakinAsia, she writes articles, reviews, conducts interviews and produces podcasts, all in the name of promoting the scene. For her Meshradio show Fixation, she gathers some of the best undiscovered/overlooked music from around the world. For her personal blog Ism, she, unlike the often throwaway blogs of musicians, manages to reel you in with her “musings on random digs” and make you give a shit.
